When I begin to type in the search window it causes an error box to pop up
and after sending the error message IE 6.0 SP1 closes. If I switch to the
classic search option everything is OK. Any ideas how to fix it? I've
already run the file scanner ( Win XP Home) and no problems are reported
with any files.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Bob

It is possible you may have parasites, spyware, adware or
malware on your system causing the problem. Download
and install, you *must* update the programs prior to running to
be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs
below. They are free and very effective. Be sure to run both
SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the other
may. It is important that you follow all directions carefully:

I've run all the utilities and everything is clean...I've also reinstalled
the .inf file in the Windows folder that coresponds to the search assistant
per a suggestion I found through a Google search on the subject and have
done a repair install of XP Home all to no avail. I'll just keep the classic
search associated with the search button for now. Personally I use Ixquick
and Google for my searches anyway...but the rest of the users here prefer to
click the "Search" button. It's a brand new HP ZD7168CL notebook and I'd
like to have everything working properly...they say I'm obsessive :>).

Hi Jim,
That was one the first things I tried. Also I've started in safe mode and
tried the search with dial up instead of my cable/router connection to
eliminate any network drivers, and updated video drivers with no change also
turned down video acceleration...still no go. All the drivers are the newest
ones that HP has to offer..even tried the search after doing the repair
install before doing any of the MS updates...no joy. I've turned off the
animated assistant and tried the others that are available. Not much left to
try from what I can see!

Other than this problem the notebook is great. they sure have come a long
way in performance...P4 3.06 GHZ. hyperthreading , 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB
ram, DVD/CD burner, wireless, infrared, firewire, 17" widescreen and less
than 10 lbs. A very impressive machine indeed!
Thanks anyway.....

Tried clearing all AutoComplete form data?
At least tried deleting whatever is there?

If this is happening with more than one user perhaps the default
search strings are corrupt? E.g. Customized version of IE?
Perhaps you have something different as a default there.
Does the Sample search work? (Just click on the buttons;
don't do any typing yet.) Try changing the search provider too (as a test).

If you are still crashing there may be some clues in your drwtsn32.log
for it. E.g. look at the Stack Back Trace and the Raw Stack Dump
for the crashing task (identified by FAULT -> prefix to address of
interpreted instruction where crash is occurring.)
