IE 6 on WindowsXP SP2 - Encoding Problems

G

Guest

I have read previous posts on this problem, but I have yet to see any real
solution.

On certain web pages the Encoding goes to whatever it wants to and the pages
look all messed up until I manually change it to 'User Defined' each time. I
have run various virus and spyware programs... nothing has helped.

How do I fix this problem? Is there a way to set a 'Default' for Encoding?

This is very annoying and the next step I will take is to get a new browser
if I can't fix this soon.

Thank You

Hi JoAnne :)

Make sure the Auto Select at the top of the box is not checked.

Then try the following:

Open IE and then select Tools | Internet Options.
Then click the "Languages" button. Add your language if it isn't already
there.
Then move it up to the top of the list. That should make IE try to display
the wesbites using that language first, then defaulting to the enxt language
if it cannot do so.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Hi Jan

Thank you for your quick response.

English (United States) was the only language on the list already, so it was
on top.

I can't figure this one out..... I am going back over previous posts again
to see if there is anything I missed.

This problem happened just 'all of a sudden' three days ago. I have been
seraching for answers ever since.

When sudden changes in normal operation occur and the usual fixes don't
work, it then appears that some 3rd party software such as malware, spyware
or parasites might be causing the problem. I suggest you follow the
instructions in the information below to make sure that your machine is
fully clean.

So I will try this again later....

I rebooted after all the checks, but I am still having the same problem

I think it is terrible that people want to infect, harm and cause problems

I guess I am stuck with this problem now :(

Thank you for your help

I am trying... LOL

I read on another forum that I found in a search, that this can happen when
you visit a website that has a script to change your encoding so that it will
match their website.... ugh!

I have just been manually adjusting the encoding for the sites I need to go
on where the encoding changes. It would be nice if there were a way to make
an encoding a default for all websites. Maybe IE will think of that for a
future release?

I see! You're doing great, too.

Yes...that is a bane to a lot of folks.

In the days pre-XP SP2, there was not much problem with encoding and/or
script and such, thus, the webmeisters just did their thing. And, many of
them still do, but, it is not the same now with the Windows XP SP2 changes.
Then, many folks don't know that XP does not come with the Java Virtual
Machine included in Internet Explorer, so they don't know that they have to
download and install either the MS Java VM or the Sun Java VM, or many of
the sites don't work for them. If you have not done this you can find it
here for XP

Download the Microsoft Java VM for Windows XP here

or the Sun Java here JRE

Took care of the Java early on and downloaded Sun Java, I do not have any
Java script problems. ...::::knock on wood:::...

I am sure there is some way around the encoding problem. It is much better
to manually change the encoding than to have had my computer crash ;) It's
all in comparison ;) I was upset at first.... but I've calmed down now :)

This is the first time you mentioned that symptom.
What are your crash details?

To expedite a diagnosis you could also look in drwtsn32.log
for lines which start with FAULT -> and match the crash you
are interested in diagnosing. Then page ahead to the
Stack Back Trace. Extract that whole section. If the next section
(Raw Stack Dump) contains any readable strings in the interpreted
portion (right column) extract it too.

Notice lines at the start of the Stack Back Trace which may (in a way)
summarize the modules which are involved in it. You could use them
with msinfo32 to capture version information for the modules in question.
E.g. Run... msinfo32 /category SWEnvLoadedModules
then (assuming they are currently loaded) select the lines which apply;
press Ctrl-c and paste that information into your problem report.

BTW if you're not sure you are finding the correct dump
you could try renaming (or deleting) the current drwtsn32.log
and wait until you are sure you have captured a reoccurrence
of your crash symptom.

Hi Robert

No... I am Not crashing! Sorry..... I was just using the comparison to say
my problem with encoding is much less than the threads I have read about that
were crashing.... meaning I can put up with manually changing the encoding
for now.

Sorry you read into my post wrong.

Thank you for your response
