IE 6 not responding and crashing when playing video

Anyone having problems with IE 6 not responding and crashing when playing
video on the msn.com website? I had to rebuild my computer because of a
hard disk failure and after installing XP SP2, IE 6 started crashing when
playing the ad portion of the video segments on msn.com. It starts plying
the ad then the sound stops the video continues and then IE 6 locks up. Odd
that it plays the videos fine when MSN does not have the ads running and
tested OK on the shockwave flash 8 website. There is another web site,
putfile.com that uses flash and IE will not play video there and will
eventually crash. I can not find any information about this problem on the
Microsoft website or the flash 8 site. It acts like there is a flash 8 and
IE 6 compatibility problem.

I should add that I’ve gone through the fresh install twice now and ended up
with the same problem. I started with the PCs manufactures restore CD that
restores the system to the original XP factory installation with SP 1. The
video worked fine until I did the SP 2 upgrade. All updates from the MS
update site request have been installed. The flash 8 install runs without
errors.

Videos (.wmv files) cause my PC to freeze about 60% of the time that
they are played - with either Windows Media Player or RealPlayer - and I
have to power cycle the PC to get it to reboot. This started after upgrading
my WinXP Pro to SP2. Upgrades to both players haven't solved the problem,
neither has switching from Norton AV/PFW to ZoneAlarm. I think SP2 is buggy.

Tim,

The interesting thing is I had SP2 installed before I lost the hard disk and
everything worked fine but I had Flash 7 installed and I cannot find a place
to down load it anymore.

Turns out that EI was being redirected to a bogus non responsive website
cpqcorp.net and was waiting for a response. The cpqcorp.net redirect was
apparently caused by a configuration installed with the HP system restore
disks that came with my HP ze5385us laptop. The SP2 upgrade impacted the
original HP SP1 restore. A very odd problem that only happened with certain
types of video that played within IE 6.
