IE 6 error messages since cable internet access

Hi: I'm hoping one of you lovely and talentedly, smart people will be able to help me.
Ever since I hooked up to Comcast cable net I have been receiving these error messages. At first everything was good to go, but after a couple of days my computer would begin to act progressively worse. I went to McAfee.com and performed an up-to-date virus scan on my whole system and the scan came back clean. I should mention by the way that Comcast also offers a free McAfee download of their personal firewall protection for a year and I downloaded that 1-2 after I did the scan. The reason I mention that is because my system would still cooperate but after 2 days it started to go downhill again. Then I went to Microsoft and updated my explorer (I had version 5) and all the patches etc. I did no good only worse. I did call Comcast for customer support and they said after an exhaustive troubleshooting that it had to be on my end because the communication with the modem everything was in the green. Now, I can't even get on the internet through my cable modem, I'm typing this through (Thank God I had't terminated yet!) my phone modem. Already though, I have had to manually shut down and hop back on. Oh! also my computer has gotten a little better, not much, but my computer is moving really slow at opening any and everything. Pleas Help. Thank You. Nina in Distress...P.S. Here's my system info: Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
Clean install using Full OEM CD /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=D:\WIN98 /IE /NF /IZ /IS /IQ /IT /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
Uptime: 0:00:59:02
Normal mode
On "NINA & DWAYNE" as ""

GenuineIntel Pentium(r) III Processor
192MB RAM
21% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (7445MB free)
Available space on drive C: 7445MB of 9777MB (FAT32)

The erroe mess. cause me to manually shut down or outright just turn it off and the mess. say IE caused a security fault 0000000, or an illegal operation or a error in Kernal.dll and will shut down. etc.etc. Hope anyone can help. It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again...

What is the exact error message?
If there is a Details button click that and give us the first two lines.

Dear Mr. Saunders, MS-MVP: Thank you so much for your timely reply, it came quicker than I expected. Here is the info. you requested: " Eplorerer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017F:bff87ed3." That is the only one I could copy down, because I cannot get on the internet at all via cable, but there were a couple of other different error messages. Thank you. Waiting Anxiously. Sincerely Nina

A. See

B. You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

DevBMP=0 <--- That's a zero
