IE 6 Desktop Icon will not display

After a significant bout with spyware, the IE6 Desktop Icon will not display.
(the one that if you right click, you get Internet Properties). Going to
Display Properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop and changing whether IE
shows or not has no effect. The Others (My Doc, My Comp, My Net Places) work
normally. I feel that this is residue from the spyware but do not know the
flag/mechanism that Win XP uses to make this "special icon" (System is XP
Pro - SP2 - All patches)

Anybody know what MS does to make the "special" IE Icon?

Hi JimO :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

There are two possibilities. First, see if this command helps, from
Start/Run:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

if not, then..........

Check "Show Internet Explorer on the desktop"

Uncheck it to remove it and check it again.

You may find http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBB/tip0900/rh0988.htm a bit
confusing for Win98 as it is not relevant for Win9x and IE6.
There is no Regedit32 (though you can use Regedit instead) but the key
they mention of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}
does not appear to be needed in Win98 as I have no such key, though I
did with Win9x and IE4. I suspect it may be valid for NT and perhaps
XP but I don't have either. That Namespace key is not deleted or
created in Win98/IE6 when the desktop icon changes though it used to
happen many years ago in Win9x and earlier versions of IE.

If you are just after an icon you could probably create one with
right-click, New Shortcut, etc.

Use Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet.
Click on Add Components and put a checkmark beside
Internet Explorer. Note the Description under the list
when you have selected it...

Description: Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer
from the Start menu and Desktop

Hope this helps :)
