IE 6 Crashing Windows XP

Since yesterday, on opening IE (v6)with XP Home (SP1) I
get an IE window which displays my home page and then
between 5 and 20 seconds later closes down causing XP to
shut down and the sytem to reboot. This only occurs when
using IE to access the Internet. When no Internet
connection is being used the PC runs fine. Windows Update
was run on the affected PC yesterday prior to these
problems occuring. I have a non-updated PC (ie last ran
Windows Update about a week or two ago) that does not have
this problem.

Any ideas - some other posts today seem similar. Any
help/ideas?

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
