IE 6 crashes at random

I'm running XP and have IE6 installed. I also have the firewall enabled.

For some weeks now, IE has been crashing. Sometimes it lasts an hour before
crashing, often just a few minutes. It hangs my entire system so I have to
reboot. There is no error message.

I've used aggressive software to track down spyware, viruses and other
nasties, but my system appears to be clean.

I've tried disabling the firewall.

I've installed all available updates for XP and my graphics etc.

I've read other posts and typed in the dll commands in Run.

I've tried scannow in Run.

The problem is as bad as ever. My system only crashes when IE6 is running,
never at other times.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.

Thanks very much Jan. I've followed those links and tried their suggestions,
but sadly I'm still having the problem.

First eliminate any spyware.

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stact. Before
you try to remove spyware using any of these programs , download a copy of

versions)

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Thank you very much Frank. I must admit, I suspect spyware or malware may be
at the bottom of this. I just don't seem to be able to track down the rogue.
I've tried a number of spyware programmes, including Spybot, Adaware, the MS
beta prog, CWShredder etc. Only the MS beta turned up any results - an 18+
site had put some spyware on my PC. I should say - I had NOT heard of that
site, still less visited it lol. Anyway, I cleaned that. I tried Hijack,
which produced a nice long list, but I am reasonably sure that the items on
the list were legitimate.

The problem is still ongoing unfortunately and I'm running out of ideas.
