IE 6 can't install any Active X components

Hello -

I am running Windows XP SP2. Last week I applied all of the latest critical
patches from Microsoft, right after I rebooted I found that I could not
install any Active X components. When an Active X control is found on a page,
I don't even get prompted to install it through th einformation bar. I have
enabled all of the settings in the Internet/Trusted Security sites to allow
all Active X components to be installed, but didn't work.

I then grabbed another computer that didn't have the patches installed. I
then applied each patch individually, rebooting after each one. After I
rebooted after applying the patch KB896688, the 2nd computer started having
the same problem.

Anyone else seeing this problem? Are there any solutions?

I'm having a similar problem that is reproducible on a number of PCs.

I've created a simple ActiveX control based on VS.NET ATL ActiveX control
(no manual code), it just displays 'ATL 7.0 : Test'. I’ve signed it with a
valid cert and deployed it here:

On WinXP SP2 with the latest IE 6, after applying patch KB896688 (as well as
the other Oct critical windows updates) the ActiveX control won't load, all I
get is a blank page.

Removing patch KB896688 and restarting Windows solves the problem.
Full sysinfo for the affected PC is available here:

What I don't understand is why other ActiveX controls can be installed on
the same box - I tried the Flash 8 ActiveX installer from Macromedia.com and
the MSN Messenger ActiveX installer and they both work fine with the patch
applied.

Did MS change IE ActiveX handling to require optional interfaces? Any info
on this will be greatly appreciated as I've got many customers with broken
functionality out there right now.

Thanks,

Do you happen to be running Hyperion Financial Management software on
these machines? We are running into this problem in my company,
however the problem only appears to be on machines running HFM.

Thanks
