IE 6 Application error

XP Pro SP2... when I attempt opening IE 6 I obtain an error
message that reads:

iexplore.exe - application error
the instruction @ "0x77d6ef68" referenced memory @
"0x000000de". The memory could not be "read". Click ok to
terminate the program.

I have tried downloading IE 6 SP1, hovever when
initializing the installation, I get a message that setup
has detected a newer version of IE already installed.
Setup cannot continue.
What am I supposed to do? Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

You have IE6sp2 now but there is no standalone version of it.
Therefore you can't take that approach to repair (except by uninstalling
XPsp2 and reinstalling it).

I suspect you will be crashing due to incompatible third-party software
so you should try to check for that possibility before reinstalling or you
will just run into the same problem again.

To see what was happening before the crash (e.g. the crashing routine's
callers), you could look at drwtsn32.log for the Stack Back Trace
associated with the FAULT -> line for your crash address.

BTW that is a peculiar diagnostic you presented us with (for NTx).
Where did you get it? Usually the best first level crash diagnostic
is the Error Signature which you can capture from the Error Reporting
window after clicking on the <click here> link. You can capture
the text in the Error Signature by dragging over it with your mouse
and then pressing Ctrl-c.

Good luck
