IE 6 Address Bar doesn't resond to manually entered http:// adress

Hi there,

running xp media center edition. IE 6 sp1 installed.

I am an experienced user, but am seeing something I've never come across
before. After opening IE, I type in a web address - any address, doesn't seem
to matter which one. After I type it in and hit enter (or the green "go"
button, I've tried both) the windows icon is moving suggesting that it is
executing and will eventually open a webpage. However, it does not.

Here's the strange part. From that same exact page, whether I stop the
previous command or not - by using a search on that page that is currently
loaded, or by clicking a saved favorites site; the page loads instantly.

Any advice? I am truly baffled. I don't get any errors through anything I'm
trying to do on IE, and the cpu is as updated and clean-running as it can be.
Why in the world would it just not allow me to load a website by typing in
it's address?????

Thanks.

Hi Aaron,

Web addresses entered via the Address bar on Internet Explorer are
pre-prosessed by a URLSearchHook component (dll file). One of the things this
does is add the www. and .com/.org etc. qualifiers to the address that you
entered. You did not mention if you were entering fully qualified urls. If
you want IE to autocomplete web addresses that you enter with the www prefix
then check your settings for Autocomplete in Internet Options (check
autocomplete web addresses).

Another thing you can try if this is not the solution is to register the
search hook componet. Enter the following in the Run dialog (Start>Run)

regsvr32.exe browseui.dll

Other possible causes are

Entries in your HOSTs file

Corrupt SearchHookURL component - Some BHO's replace the MS SearchHookURL
component with their own (ICQ Toolbar, Cool Web Search toolbar and the Yahoo
toolbar). You can restore the MS SearchHookURL component with the download
available from http://www.iecustomizer.com/searchhookfixdownload.htm

Lastly if these suggestions don't fix it try a complete repair. You will
find instructions for this at

H,
Adding to excellent suggestions from Rob...
This might be an autocomplete problem caused by a corrupted History folder.

First try CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ Check the boxes to clear
history and index.dat.

You may have to delete the History folder. A new one will be created on
restart. Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder (and the index.dat file)

Or the History folder can be deleted manually:

Hope this helps,
Don
