IE 6.0 won't display updates - Office.Microsoft.com update web sit

This is weird.

IE 6.0 works fine, displays and opens the pop-ups (normally blocked) for any
Microsoft site except the Office 2000 update site.

Office.Microsoft.com is already in my trusted web sites and active X
controls are turned on.

When I go to the Office.Miscrosoft.com web site and ask it to check for
updates, it tries to open the dialogue box and the catalogue but then brings
me to a screen that tells me that my active X controls are not set properly
for this site.

There is no pop-up notification with this one site.

Consequently, because I cannot get the browser to behave the way it does
with all other MS sites, I can't see the latest updates I might need to pull
down. GRRRRR

Any ideas on how to fix the browser so that it works properly?

XP Home Edition SP2 latest patches pulled down 10/10/06

Yes, that is the office update page link.

In the 'Things to Do' frame when you click on the 'check for updates' link
it prompts to install the Office Update Installation Engine following the two
steps that should appear in the Internet Explorer's Info Barjust below the
address dialogue box, but my browser does not display this info bar at all
(in office update). It then flashes a screen telling you to install the
office update active X controls.

But I can't because there aren't any hot spots to click on, other than the "
....If not, follow the directions on the Office Update ActiveX Control Failed
to Load troubleshooting page..." which leads you to adjust the active X
controls and trusted sites. None of these adjustments has cured the problem
however.

This update screen works fine on two W2K machines in our household, - mine
(under XP) is the holdout! All the tweaking in the world of the security
settings won't stop it from blocking the look-up of necessary office updates
in the catalogue.

Oddly, I can go to any MS support page other than this one and the pop-up
alert works fine, I enable it for this session with the current page and
presto, it works every time except, .....windows office.

Canonman,

At this point, aside from the classic reformat and reinstall your
operating system solution (lol) you could try a couple things.

1. Open internet properties within IE, on the "general" tab click on
the "settings" button and then click on "view objects." Look for any
programs that seem to be related to microsoft/windows/office update and
also WUWebControlClass. Delete them. (Everything in this folder is
found at C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files) Also, delete all your
temporary internet files, and delete all your temp files. Easiest way
to find the location of your temp files is to open a command prompt by
going to "run" and typing "cmd" and then typing set. You should get a
bunch of paths, you are looking for the one at the end that says either
TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1 or
TMP=C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\1 Delete as much as you can out
of this folder, some files are going to be in use and you won't be able
to delete them, this is normal. Also, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
and delete everything inside this folder. Restart your computer and try
again.

2. Install IE7:

Matt, you are a lifesaver!

The instructions were great and it worked like a charm.

When I launced the browser and went to teh office updates web page, it
pulled up and searched the catalogue and found one update that I needed to
install.

Thank you so much for interrogating the problem to clearly understand my
issue and for giving me excellent instructions and timely feedback.

Have a great day!
