IE 6.0 - Slow, slower, stopped

I've upgraded my browser to IE 6.0, and whereas overall
I've had no problems, and even sorted out a couple of
issues, I noticed 6.0 slows pageloading *considerably*.
There are a few sites I frequently visit that usually
download in the blink of an eye, in 0.5 seconds, or so,
that now take half a minute to load. It's much more
significant in the slower-loding pages, seeing as the
process sometimes takes so much time the page is then
redirected to a "The Page cannot be displayed" message.
However, the most usual occurrence now is the page
supposedly loading, a message with 'Concluded' on the
bottom-left, but no page showing up, only a blank screen.
If I refresh the page, I likely get an error page. I've
already checked for spyware and assorted pests, and the PC
is clean.

When I open a new window and have two pages loading at the
same time, then, I might as well go out for a coffee while
I wait for them to load - and that's if they load at all.
I don't see anything in my settings that could be
provoking this, though I'm admittedly ignorant on that
matter, but I see several people complaining about having
the same problem with IE 6.0. Is it really something with
the browser, and is there anything I can do to restitute
my PC to its former speed? I have a DSL connection, and
it'd never been so slow since I'd last used a dial-up!

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.
