IE 6.0 Problems after Spyware/Adware Problem, Maybe Virus?

A few days ago I had serious problems with popups - added a
pop software. I am now experiencing problems with IE6.0 -
- it will load pages such as cnn.com, but will not allow me
to load onto any pages that require authenication. I have
changed all of my security settings, etc to low, turned off
the popup blocker, returned all settings to default and it
still won't work. These sort of pages, including WIndows
update error out. I downloaded netscape to see if this was
a system or browser problem - netscape works fine so it
appears to be a IE browser problem. I tried to uninstall
IE 6.0 but it does not come up as an available software
from the Uninstall in the Control Panel. This is feeling
like a virus problem, any ideas how to fix this problem?

This is possibly being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)
