IE 6.0 Broswer Window Sizing / Maximizing

B

Buck

I've gone through each of the steps below individually.
Windows XP user here w/SP2 installed and IE 6.0.

My issue is this: I want secondary broswer windows to be
maximized. I don't want them to be tiled, 1/2 size, but
MAXIMIZED. I have deleted the hkey reg entry and my
PRIMARY window will come up maximized, but whenever I
right click a link or a link automatically opens a
secondary new window, it is always just slightly smaller
than maximized. Are there any special tricks for making
all secondary browser windows maximized?

onecomputerguy.com's site didn't seem to have any
reference to this.

Thanks!

Here are a few suggestions that might help. I'm sure others here will also
have suggestions that will help, but, this will get you started:

Open Internet Explorer, resize to your desired size, then click file >
close.
Internet Explorer should now remember your last saved window size.

Resizing Windows -

To control the size of primary and secondary IE windows, start by closing
all IE windows. Then launch IE, right-click on any link, and choose Open in
New Window. Size the secondary window the way you want all such windows to
be. Now close it by clicking on the X icon at the top-right corner while
holding down the Shift key. Repeat this for the primary window that remains.
You may have to repeat the process from time to time.

If you always want your home page to open in precisely the same size and
position, you can add a little JavaScript to the home page URL. Select
Internet Options from the Tools menu and edit the Address line in the Home
Page panel so it looks something like this: javascript:resizeTo(1024,400);
moveTo(0,0);document.location.href='http://www.google.com'. You can also
edit any Favorite in the same way. Right-click on the item in the Favorites
menu and choose Properties. In the URL field, enter a command like the one
above. When you click on OK,IE will tell you there's a problem and ask
whether you want to proceed anyway. Click on Yes.

Windows remembers the size of the last Normal IE window closed.
Open such a link.
Don't use the maximize button.
Stretch the edges/corners so that the window fills the screen.

To keep more than one browser window open at a time, click File in the main

a new browser window with Ctrl+N.

Hi Buck :)

Thank you for your patience. :) I've had the opportunity to consult with
a few of the MVP's here on this problem, and they have made some further
suggestions that might also help:

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

"Close all windows EXCEPT the one that open "minimized"; right click on your
Task Bar, either on the open space on the right or left end (your choice);
select "Tile Windows Horizontally" and IE will maximize; close IE. Re-open
IE and it will be maximized. Just showed a buddy this trick yesterday and
works like a charm. Enjoy."

It does work like a charm, but it isn't quite a normal "maximize" just a
full screen with a border. However, it does subsequently hold that.

There's also AutoSizer, free, here: http://www.southbaypc.com/ (what I
use, BTW)

Here's another, courtesy of a Frank Saunders post:

"From: http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/offpos.htm

Symptom: IE opens a maximized window shifted down and to the right.

Remove any 'Auto-hide' option for the taskbar and while the window is
maximized, resize the taskbar then return it to the desired size. This is to
try to make Windows re-calculate the window size and boundaries.

If no joy, run regedit and remove these registry key values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.

Please post back and let me know if these help. If not, please included any
error messages with the exact wording, and all details of what is happening.
This way, we will have more information as to what may be happening to
prevent them from working properly. This is a problem that is very
widespread and, although you are not alone in your misery, we know that it
is a pain and we hope to get your problem fuly resolved.

Hope this helps

Jan,

Thanks for all your help, but I GIVE UP!

Intuitively, if IE 'remembers' the position and size of
the last window closed, I should be able to close all
windows except for the 'minimized' second window, maximize
the window and it should remember. But that doesn't work.

Tiling isn't what I had in mind because it's not
maximized. I'm using a program called IE New Window
Maximizer and it works, but I feel these kind of programs
are sort of an inelegant solution for what should be a
pretty straight forward feature. Maybe I'm asking too
much and I'm missing something about the reason you do not
want secondary browser windows maximized on opening...

In any even, appreciate your help.

Buck

PS I've tried the regedit deletes, looked at
southbaysoftware (can't find Autosizer? Is it part of one
of the other programs?). Resizing the taskbar just made
the 2nd window open with a big space at the bottom. Uugh!

You're very welcome, Buck! :) Sorry that none of the suggestions have
worked for you. Perhaps the Autosizer will. But, there may be something
that get changed in the formats with the SP2. As the old saying goes,
progress is 1 step forward, and 3 steps back. :=))

Hopefully, someone will find a way to provide the answer for your dilemma.
If I run across a better idea or suggestion I'll post it up here on the NG.
Hope you'll do the same. :)

Also, you can find the Autosizer here:
http://www.firase.com/AutoSizer/
perhaps SouthBay no longer sponsors it:
