Identifying a USB Device to Disconnet

I have a HD (hard drive) on D:. I put in a SanDisk thumb disk, and it became
K:. When I try to disconnect with the icon in the tray, I really do not
have a good idea which device I'm trying to disconnect. The dialog isn't
always that helpful. Sometimes I get to a second dialog, and some times a
little pulldown menu does it. I managed to disconnect the HD. I then fired
up System->Device Drivers and did a scan. Under HD I see both HDs. However,
when I look at My Computers there is no D:. What's up?

I think the dialog is pretty specific when one
clicks on the
"Safely Remove Hardward" icon in the system tray. For drives, it lists
the drives that can be removed by their drive letters. That is, if it
says Drive(K:), it is referring to your SanDisk thumb disk.

Now what is the hard drive on Drive D? Is it a removable hard drive
in a USB or Firewire enclosure? If it is a removable hard drive, then
it is easy to carelessly dismount it when guessing at deciding which
one (or both) of the drive letters to select.

When you single left click the icon then you get the popup
menu with drive letters. If you double click the icon,
the the dialog opens. There is a checkbox 'show device
components'. If it's checked, drive letters are shown.
Otherwise only the device class name is shown which is
indeed no help...

It's an external drive, HD, 300G or close. It's in an ADS enclosure, Western
Digital. I find it odd that a Device scan shows it, but it doesn't attach.

The question now is how do I get the D: HD online? I guess I can reboot.
Fortunately, I do not use it a lot.

My UMAX scanner (USB) is always listed clearly.

Ah ha. Thanks. A check box. While I'm at it, how about (System) "Devices".
When I look at USB connections (I believe), it doesn't show what's
connected, for example, a SanDisk or scanner. Is there someway to find out?
Maybe that's really the function of the tray icon?
