Now that the digital cameras are being offered at higher Mega Pixels (6 and 8 MP), the need for large capacity storage at reasonable price is the need of the day. Portability is also favoured since many use Laptops along with digital cameras when travelling. USB Key was popular but the cost per MB is still on the higher side and capacities are not as big as what a portable drive can offer.

Lacie and Plextor have recently introduced 40 and 80 GB portable drives. Lacie has the option of fingerprint recognition which makes the data very secure (if that is the need). Plextor’s drive is very stylish and comes with data protection switch. Both drives are bus powered and do not need any adaptors to power them. 40 and 80 GB variants are available with 5400 RPM speed and 8 MB or higher cache.
