IDE Scan freeze

Hi, Hope somebody can help this is driving me mad.

XP Professional recently installed (with all hotfixes etc
from Update site). XP recognises all my drives (ScSI HD &
CD Rom, Secondary IDE NEC DVD writer (master) Generic DVD
rom (slave)) but, whenever I try nero, alcohol 52% or
anything that wants to scan the drives on the PC freezes
these applictaions & they can't be stopped from 'task
manager'. I can still use the SCSI interface ok. The
nero site suggested disabling DMA but there is no option
in the system properties for any of the drives for this!!
My Win 2K partition works correctly so, I figure, this
must be a XP driver/installation problem (obviously all
available drivers from motherboard manufactures, IWILL,
web-site installed)
Any ideas?

Don't know what happened to the origional post but here it

Found a thread that suggested its a problem with Nero &
going to an old version fixed it,

but its happening on more thanone application.
