IDE disk detection freezes

Just after memory test, the IDE disks detection froze before I had the
access to the setup.
I turned the computer Off then On & rebooted 4 or 5 times, noway.
I turned it off again, pulled & pushed on the flat cables without any
success afterwards.
Then, after I toggled the PSU switch, removed the power supply cord on the
rear and re-established the power it rebooted normally.

Any clue ?

The IDE units are two Maxtor disks 6E040L0 & ST040H4 40 GB both and an LG
CD-R/RW burner ref GCE8520B
The board is an Asus A7N8X with an Athlon 2400+ with 512 MB RAM
Sometimes the video freezes during boot or during Win sessions for one or
two seconds but no more.

I saw the same symtoms in a friend's computer.
After a lot of running down wrong paths,
all it was was an
intermittant contact in a memory module. I
pulled the memory, cleaned off the contacts,
and re-inserted them, and bingo! No more
problems.
