IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers question.

I have a motherboard with an Intel 875 chipset (Intel 82845E MCH and Intel
82801 DB ICH4). This is probably because of the Beta and the chipset driver
contained in it, but I am showing something a little strange in Device
Manager.

Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers heading, I have 2 Intel 82801EB Ultra
ATA Storage Controllers, designated 24D1 and 24DB.

Along with that, I have 2 ATA Channel 0 and 2 ATA Channel 1 entries. Each
ATA Channel entry says it can support 2 devices, so it would appear I can
now support 8 devices on a 4 device motherboard. One of the ATA Channel 1
entries does show my 2 CD/DVD devices with Target ID 1 and 0, which would
seem to be normal.

I tried deleting each of the main controller entries but it reinstalled
itself. Could this be related to a SATA situation?

Thanks,
Clark

Yes. If your BIOS allows the SATA device to be
identified as a SATA (IDE) channel, and the
software drivers also supports that, then you
will have multiple ATA channels because the SATA
is being identified as a ATA channel as well as
the Parallel ADA (PATA) channel. So you have 2
channels in your case.

OK, Thanks--it seems to be working fine. No data corruption or anything.
Normally in XP the SATA controllers are in a different area in the device
manager. But I suppose that might depend on the motherboard and how it is
set up.
