IDE 2 ATA

My XP machine died. I'm sitting here with a maxtor diamondmax 10, 300 gigHD filled with stuff that I want.
the drive is a PATA133, 300 gig. You can't find much beyond someone wanting one on the web. Maxtor is now Seagate. actually happened the moment I got this drive. It's non-existent at Maxtor/Seagate.
The drive works. No problem there.
I now have a Pavilion a1723w.

The specs on it say
Parallel ATA l One 40-pin UltraDMA 100/66/33 connector
l Supports PIO, multi-word DMA modes
l Supports 2 PATA disk drives on one PATA ribbon
cable (2 drives total, ODD only)

Parallel ATA l One 40-pin UltraDMA 100/66/33 connector
I figured I could plug it into this one.but the cable connector is about 1/16 inch too long. It doesn't plug in.
Anyone have any idea if the drive and the computer can function together maybe with a downsizing connector ?

A ATA drive (short for Advanced Technology Attachment) is also known
as IDE,(Integrated Drive Electronics) which supports one or two hard
drives in various PIO modes. ATA-33/66/100 or ATA Ultra are all just
different flavors and refer to the transfer speed supported. Higher is
better. These all typically use a ribbon cable of either 40 or 80 wir
design. The connectors are the same width and only have 40 connectors
regardless. The 80 wire versions support the higher speed standards
where every other wire in the cable is grounded just to kill
crosstalk.

The newer standard SATA or sometimes expressed as S-ATA used a new
designed of interface cable that is solid, one piece and much thiner
with a much smaller connector and aren't ribbon cables. There's no way
to confuse them with th older ATA cables.

I'm not sure what you mean by "1/16 inch too long". Are you referring
to the connector's width (across the connectors) or it's depth? It
seems what you need is a standard IDE cable you can pick up anywhere
for nominal cost. Since you have a PATA 133, that refers that to it's
ATA rating so you have a IDE ATA/133 drive that needs a 80 wire
connector... remember it will only have 40 actual connectors, there
are however 80 wires. Hope that isn't too confusing.

Are you sure you are not mistaking the floppy disk connector for the IDE
connector? Floppy drive connector has 34 pins instead of 40 pins.

The width of the connector is about 1/16 inch too long for the board connector.

The connectors came from the IDE drives on my Asus P4P800.
