Hi everyone, I hope someone can help.

I originally posted this on windowsxp.help_and_support but there have
been no responses, so perhaps this is a more appropriate NG.

I have ( had! ) a network of 4 pc's, all running XP Pro with all
updates networked through a hub.

Machine #1 is the ICS host, configured using the wizard.

All other machines naturally use this for web connection, configured as
clients using the wizard.

For some reason, these machines now can't access the web at all -
although they can control the dialup on machine #1.

Machine 1 was on, but not connected - I switched on machine #2 and
straight away the connection tab appears, showing me it's connected at
576 , so obviously the other machines can "see" the ICS connection.

So I figured it was just some glitch and re-ran the wizard on all
machines again - and it was fine. Switched them off last night, and the
same problem this morning - yet despite running the wizard several
times on all machines, the problem persists but now with no web access
at all except for machine #1.

The machines can see each other on the network, so I know it's not a
physical connection problem.

Any ideas what else I can try ? I even toyed with the idea of scrapping
the network and starting totally afresh but wasn't sure how to do this.

Any hints or clues are very welcome, I'm really frustrated here!

Please bear in mind with your advice that whilst I'm not clueless, I'm
not far from it!!!

Regards from Scotland,

Dave.

Have you tried PINGing the modem on the ICS host by IP? an external host by
IP?

This would be the place to start.

Hi Rob,

if I had the faintest idea how to do that, I'd probably give it a go!
;-)

Care to enlighten me, in the most monosyllabic way possible?

Many thanks!

Just press "Run" in the root of the startmenu.
There you just have to type cmd or command to bring up an
commandprompt.
From there you can type eg. "ping 192.168.0.1" to "Ping" a host with
that adress. You can also type "ipconfig" at the commandprompt to see
the IP of the specific computer.
