ICS in SP2

Hello

I have 3 network connections on my desktop and 2 on my laptop

Desktop :

RJ45
192.168.0.2

Firewire (1394)
192.168.0.11

Wifi
192.168.0.21

My internet is a dial up DSL and i can't share it because when I do so I
hgave 2 problems :

1) it tells me I have to choose 1 (and only 1) private network connection
and of course I'd like to have ALL of them being able to use
the gateway and not only WIFI or RJ45 or 1394

2) When I chgosse any of the "private" connections I get a message saying
it's not possible because he wants to change my IP to
192.168.0.1 (logic) and it can't because it's already taken which is not
true, in fact the RJ45 has a problem and gets 0.0.0.0 as an
adress and i can't correct this.

Here's the result of ipconfig /all

thanks for the help

Are you actually using the 1394 connections for networking between the
computers? If not, simplify the network setup by right-clicking and
disabling them on both computers.

I'm puzzled by the ipconfig output for the desktop, because it doesn't
show that any network connection is suitable for connecting to the
laptop. The 1394 and WIFI connections are both disconnected.

I assume that the Ethernet (RJ45) connection connects to your DSL
modem, so it's OK for it not to have a valid IP address. With DSL
using PPPoE, the PPP ADSL connection gets an IP address from your ISP,
and the Ethernet connection doesn't.

To use multiple LAN connections for sharing an Internet connection:

1. Disable ICS on the Internet connection (PPP ADSL).

2. Create a network bridge between the LAN connections. I've written
a web page with details:

XP ICS - Network Bridge
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networkbridge.htm

3. Enable ICS on the Internet Connection. If it asks what connection
to use for the home network, tell it to use the network bridge.

If ICS still complains about 192.168.0.1 being in use, what happens
when you enter this command?

ping -a 192.168.0.1

Are you actually using the 1394 connections for networking between the
computers? If not, simplify the network setup by right-clicking and
disabling them on both computers.

I use the 1394 for "quick and dirty" networking because it's faster than
normal RJ45 (400 Megs vs 100 Megs)

I'm puzzled by the ipconfig output for the desktop, because it doesn't
show that any network connection is suitable for connecting to the
laptop. The 1394 and WIFI connections are both disconnected.

When I made the ipconfig the laptop was shuit off, hence the nothing
connected

I assume that the Ethernet (RJ45) connection connects to your DSL
modem,

No, that's another problem, all the articles I've seen refer to this
method but over eher in Europe we get USB DSL modems so my RJ45 card is
"free"

I'm trying now the other questions/tips you have and will report, thanks
for the help....

so it's OK for it not to have a valid IP address. With DSL

Hello again,

I've bridged the network connection, it didn't ask for anything special
and the network parameters are now behaving like a "normal" bridged ie I
have no longer individual control over each card's TCP/IP properties but I
have set the bridge properties to 192.168.0.1 but the reported IP is still
0.0.0.0

When I try to share I now get a 1722 error "the RPC service is not
responding" (approx translation since my system is in french)

I have looked in the services and both things I have seen that mention RPC
are started so where could I look now ?

1 more "cosmetic" question, is it possible to change the aspect of the
icons indicating the network status (what i call the "2 little screens")
because I now have 4 in my taskbar (internet, rj45, 1394 and wifi) and
although wifi has a different look it woukld be nice to have

Thanks again

I've narrowed down the problem...

When I set the bridge IP to 192.168.0.2 it seems to hold on, here's the

What can i try to correct this ?

Hi,

Thank you for posting here!

In order to isolate the cause, let us start the whole configruation from
the beginning.

I prefer to disable IEEE 1394 firewire and WiFi temporarily, so that we can
be clearly on the ICS configruation. To disable the two network connection,
go to Control Panel -> Network Connections and then right click the
connection icon of IEEE 1394 firewire, and then choose Disable from the
context menu. You can disable WiFi connection with the similar steps.

Based on my experience, DSL uses a PPPoE connection to the Internet. Please
follow the steps below to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on the
PPPoE connection.

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.

2. Click the PPPoE connection under the Broadband group that you want to
share, and then click "Change settings of this connection" under Network
Tasks.

3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the "Allow other network users to
connect through this computer's Internet connection" check box.

4. Under Internet Connection Sharing, in "Home networking connection",
click the LAN (Local Area Network) connection (The connection of your RJ45)
that connects the computer that is sharing its PPPoE Internet connection to
the other computers on your network.

5. Click OK to exit.

NOTE: When you select the connection to share, it must be the external
connection that connects the ICS host to the Internet. Selecting the wrong
connection causes ICS to not work.

IMPORTANT: When you enable ICS, the network adapter that is connected
receives a new static IP address of 192.168.0.1, with a subnet mask of
255.255.255.0. Existing TCP/IP connections on the network may be lost.

On the laptop, to confirm the RJ45 network connection and IP configuration:

1. Log on to the laptop as an Administrator.

2. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel.

3. In Control Panel, double click Network Connections.

5. Right-click "Local Area Connection" and then on the shortcut menu that
appears, click Properties.

6. On the General tab, in the "This connection uses the following items"
list, click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", and then click Properties.

7. In the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" dialog box, click "Obtain
an IP address automatically" (if it is not already selected), and then
click OK.

NOTE: You can also assign a unique static IP address in the range of
192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. For example, you can assign the following
static IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway:

IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1

8. Click OK to exit.

Hello

Thanks for the tips but the problem is still there, upon "refresh" of the
network adress from "manual" 192.168.0.1 to "automatic" 192.168.0.1 I get
the same error, the given adresse is 0.0.0.0 and when I push "repair" I
get an error saying that it's impossible to renew my IP adress.

Of course the problem is here since I installed SP2....

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for the reply!

As I know, you want to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the Desktop.
We have disabled the WiFi and IEEE 1394 firewaire, so only RJ45 can be used
to connect to internal network.

As the Desktop works as ICS Host, the IP address for the network card which
connecting to internal network must be manually configured. This is because
the ICS Host will be the server to assign the IP address to other computers
in the private network. If you change it to automatic configuation, it
cannot get the IP address. Then you will see 0.0.0.0 as the IP address.

I hope that I have explained clearly.

Have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,

Feng Mao [MSFT], MCSE

|

|
|
| Thanks
