ICS fails on reboot

C

Chris Lober

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client PC can connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

The realtek nic still has DHCP enabled which makes it seem like ICS wasn't
configured properly. Have you tried disabling it and reconfiguring?

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or force it to come on

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first and then succeeds).

Thanks.

So could the client computer see the Internet before the reboot?

Has there ever been a 3rd party firewall installed on this machine?

Are you running SP1 on the ICS host?

You might also try setting up ICS through the Advanced tab of the Adelphia
network connections properties.

Yes the client did see the Net before the reboot.

There has never been a 3rd party firewall on either machine. (I use
to use redhat linux on another machine for my firewall before
switching to WinXP.)

I did try removing ICS, rebooting, setting ICS through the Advanced
tab of the Adelphia network connections property and the same result.
It works until I reboot.

I did find that after I reboot if I go to Administrative Tools ->
Services
click on Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS)
click stop
click start

The service starts working again and every machine can see the Net.

The real problem is that after I reboot IP Routing Enabled is set to
No and the client cannot see the Net.

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : CLOBER
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

After I restart the ICF/ICS service IP Routing Enabled is set to Yes
and everything is great.

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : CLOBER
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Is there a command line option to restart the ICF/ICS service?
Is there a command line option to set IP Routing Enabled to Yes?

If you know the command line option to stop and start the ICF/ICS
service I can just put that in a start up file after I reboot.

Thanks.

Are you running SP1 on the ICS host?

You might also try setting up ICS through the Advanced tab of the Adelphia

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first and then succeeds).

Thanks.

The realtek nic still has DHCP enabled which makes it seem like ICS wasn't

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client PC can connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

These are the command you are looking for.

net stop sharedaccess
net start sharedaccess

I'll have to ask if anyone known why routing doesn't get enabled.

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first and then succeeds).

Thanks.

I'll have to ask if anyone known why routing doesn't get enabled.

The realtek nic still has DHCP enabled which makes it seem like ICS
wasn't
configured properly. Have you tried disabling it and reconfiguring?

Someone suggested that you should look through your startup groups and Run
regkeys and see if there might be an app interfering.

Also have you ever configured RRAS NAT on this machine?

Again this looked good.

I rebooted.

I can now see both PC on the network and pass files between them but
my client WinXP cannot access the web.

For some reason IP routing is not enabled after I reboot.

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first and then succeeds).

Thanks.

The realtek nic still has DHCP enabled which makes it seem like ICS
wasn't
configured properly. Have you tried disabling it and reconfiguring?

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client PC can connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

Hi Ken,

I've never configured a RRAS NAT on this machine.

I checked Start -> Program Files -> Startup and it was
empty.

I try not to play around with the registry so I'm not
sure how to check the regkeys and look at any apps that
might be interferring. Can you provide more detail?

I checked the Event Viewer and there are no errors.

Thanks.

Also have you ever configured RRAS NAT on this machine?

Has there ever been a 3rd party firewall installed on this machine?

Are you running SP1 on the ICS host?

Run "msconfig" and look at the startup tab. That will show you items from a
collection of regkeys. If you actually need to remove something suspicious
you will need to use regedit.

Yes the client did see the Net before the reboot.

I did find that after I reboot if I go to

click on Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet

The service starts working again and every machine can
see the Net.

The real problem is that after I reboot IP Routing

Is there a command line option to restart the ICF/ICS

Is there a command line option to set IP Routing

If you know the command line option to stop and start
the ICF/ICS

Thanks.

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or
force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small
office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first
and then succeeds).

Thanks.

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client PC can
connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

Okay. I have 5 items in the msconfig -> startup tab

nwiz - for my Nvidia card
NvCpl - for my Nvidia card
Activation - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money\System\Activation.exe"
qttask - "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -
atboottime
E_S10IC2 - from my Epson Printer

I don't think any of those should be removed although I
could get rid of QuickTime if you think that would make a
difference.

What do you think?

Thanks.

--Chris

-----Original Message-----
Run "msconfig" and look at the startup tab. That will show you items from a
collection of regkeys. If you actually need to remove something suspicious
you will need to use regedit.

Thanks.

Someone suggested that you should look through your startup groups and Run
regkeys and see if there might be an app interfering.

Also have you ever configured RRAS NAT on this machine?

Hi Ken,

Thanks!! That will work for now. If you do find out
why routing isn't enabled please let me know.

These are the command you are looking for.

net stop sharedaccess
net start sharedaccess

I'll have to ask if anyone known why routing
doesn't
get
warranties,
and
confers no rights.
Yes the client did see the Net before the reboot.

There has never been a 3rd party firewall on either
machine. (I use
to use redhat linux on another machine for my firewall
before
switching to WinXP.)

I did try removing ICS, rebooting, setting ICS through
the Advanced
tab of the Adelphia network connections property and
the same result.
It works until I reboot.

I did find that after I reboot if I go to
Administrative Tools ->
Services
click on Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet
Connection
Sharing (ICS)
click stop
click start

The service starts working again and every
machine
can
see the Net.

The real problem is that after I reboot IP Routing
Enabled is set to
No and the client cannot see the Net.

Windows IP Configuration

Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

After I restart the ICF/ICS service IP Routing Enabled
is set to Yes
and everything is great.

Is there a command line option to restart the ICF/ICS
service?
Is there a command line option to set IP Routing
Enabled to Yes?

If you know the command line option to stop and start
the ICF/ICS
service I can just put that in a start up file after I
reboot.

Thanks.

Are you running SP1 on the ICS host?

You might also try setting up ICS through the

Adelphia

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or
force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or small
office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first
and then succeeds).

Thanks.

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client

can
connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

Hi Ken,

Just for kicks I tried setting up ICS with the other XP
PC that I have and it has the same problem.

My father-in-law uses ICS with WinXP but doesn't have
this problem.

My two XP PC's have NVidia cards.
My father-in-law does not have a NVidia card.

I'm wondering if the NVidia driver that starts up and is
in msconfig is causing this problem.

If you guys get bored and have some spare time maybe this
could be looked into more closely :)

For now I'll just continue to restart the service after
boot up.

Thanks.

Okay. I have 5 items in the msconfig -> startup tab

nwiz - for my Nvidia card
NvCpl - for my Nvidia card
Activation - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money\System\Activation.exe"
qttask - "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -
atboottime
E_S10IC2 - from my Epson Printer

I don't think any of those should be removed although I
could get rid of QuickTime if you think that would make a
difference.

What do you think?

Thanks.

Run "msconfig" and look at the startup tab. That will show you items from a
collection of regkeys. If you actually need to remove something suspicious
you will need to use regedit.

Yes the client did see the Net before the reboot.

There has never been a 3rd party firewall on either
machine. (I use
to use redhat linux on another machine for my
firewall
before
switching to WinXP.)

I did try removing ICS, rebooting, setting ICS
through
the Advanced
tab of the Adelphia network connections
property
and
the same result.
It works until I reboot.

I did find that after I reboot if I go to
Administrative Tools ->
Services
click on Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) /
Internet
Connection
Sharing (ICS)
click stop
click start

The service starts working again and every machine
can
see the Net.

The real problem is that after I reboot IP Routing
Enabled is set to
No and the client cannot see the Net.

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : CLOBER
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

After I restart the ICF/ICS service IP Routing
Enabled
is set to Yes
and everything is great.

Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid

Is there a command line option to restart the
ICF/ICS
service?
Is there a command line option to set IP Routing
Enabled to Yes?

If you know the command line option to stop and
start
the ICF/ICS
service I can just put that in a start up file
after I
reboot.

Thanks.

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I reboot or
force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or
small
office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails first
and then succeeds).

Thanks.

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client PC
can
connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.

Ken,

Okay.

Yes the cards do work at reboot without ICS.

-----Original Message-----
I wouldn't think any of those would interfere. I may have asked this
already (sorry in a hurry), but do the cards work at boot without ICS?

Hi Ken,

Just for kicks I tried setting up ICS with the other XP
PC that I have and it has the same problem.

My father-in-law uses ICS with WinXP but doesn't have
this problem.

My two XP PC's have NVidia cards.
My father-in-law does not have a NVidia card.

I'm wondering if the NVidia driver that starts up and is
in msconfig is causing this problem.

If you guys get bored and have some spare time maybe this
could be looked into more closely :)

For now I'll just continue to restart the service after
boot up.

Thanks.

Okay. I have 5 items in the msconfig -> startup tab

nwiz - for my Nvidia card
NvCpl - for my Nvidia card
Activation - "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Money\System\Activation.exe"
qttask - "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -
atboottime
E_S10IC2 - from my Epson Printer

I don't think any of those should be removed although I
could get rid of QuickTime if you think that would
make
a
difference.

What do you think?

Thanks.

--Chris

-----Original Message-----
Run "msconfig" and look at the startup tab. That will
show you items from a
collection of regkeys. If you actually need to remove
something suspicious
you will need to use regedit.

Thanks.

Someone suggested that you should look through your
startup groups and Run
regkeys and see if there might be an app interfering.

Also have you ever configured RRAS NAT on this
machine?

Hi Ken,

Thanks!! That will work for now. If you do find
out
why routing isn't enabled please let me know.

-----Original Message-----
These are the command you are looking for.

net stop sharedaccess
net start sharedaccess

I'll have to ask if anyone known why routing
doesn't
get
enabled.

Yes the client did see the Net before the reboot.

There has never been a 3rd party firewall on
either
machine. (I use
to use redhat linux on another machine for my
firewall
before
switching to WinXP.)

I did try removing ICS, rebooting, setting ICS
through
the Advanced
tab of the Adelphia network connections property
and
the same result.
It works until I reboot.

I did find that after I reboot if I go to
Administrative Tools ->
Services
click on Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) /
Internet
Connection
Sharing (ICS)
click stop
click start

The service starts working again and every
machine
can
see the Net.

The real problem is that after I reboot IP
Routing
Enabled is set to
No and the client cannot see the Net.

After I restart the ICF/ICS service IP Routing
Enabled
is set to Yes
and everything is great.

Is there a command line option to restart the

Is there a command line option to set IP Routing
Enabled to Yes?

If you know the command line option to stop and
start
the ICF/ICS
service I can just put that in a start up file
after I
reboot.

Thanks.

Are you running SP1 on the ICS host?

You might also try setting up ICS through the
Advanced tab of the

Again thanks for your help.

How do I turn on IP routing after I
reboot
or
force it to come on
after I reboot?

Right now I have rerun the "Set up a home or
small
office network"
wizard after a reboot (which always fails
first
and then succeeds).

Thanks.

The realtek nic still has DHCP enabled
which
makes it seem like ICS
wasn't
configured properly. Have you tried
disabling
it and reconfiguring?

Hi,

I have WinXP Home.
I set up ICS using the Network Setup
Wizard.
When I reboot though none of the client
PC
can
connect and the
internal nic does not have an IP address.

Is there a fix for this?

Let me know if you need more info.
