why do my icons disappear from the pages i put on my desktop?

Crystal Ball(tm) sez that you are talking about the specialized icons that
show up on some websites. These are called "favicons" and are kept in your
Temporary Internet Files. As the TIF's are periodically cleaned out, the
favicons disappear until you visit the website again.

Here is information how to keep your favicons from MVP Kelly Theriot:

favourite icons (line 108, right column)

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and clear your cache. For Internet
Explorer's Temporary Files, go to Control Panel>Internet Options>General
tab. You'll see where you can delete cookies and files. For Windows
Temporary files, Start>Run cleanmgr [enter]. Run the Disk Cleanup.

As for the link to MVP Kelly Theriot's utility to save favicons, I don't
know how much clearer I can put it. Read the instructions at the top of the
page then go to the link on the right-hand column at line 108 and download
the zipped utility. Open the zipped file and read the Read Me and apply the
utility!
