icons on desk top & folders change

L

Leonard F Kiesling

using xp home, sp1, dell desktop 4600, 5 mos old. upon swithcing users, &
sometimes just opening a folder, my documents for example, the icons are
viewing as generic icons, & then they slowly change to the proper icons. at
one time, on 1 user, the icons on the desktop stayed generic; had to log on
& off the user a few times; then they slowly changed back to normal. is
there a way to have them view immediately? thank you, len kiesling

thanks for reply! (i'm at work computer now) i had done this on my win 98se,
as per : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q132668

i see on kelly's site, #121 downloads a file. after downloading, do you save
to hard drive then double click file to run the program to change the icon
cache?

or, should i just do it thru editing the registry as per the above KB
article?
thanks again, len kiesling

Clicking on that link in Kelly's site will download a .vbs script
(visual basic script). Once saved double click it. It will write the
changes to the registry for you. Just depends on how you want to do it.

rock, thanks for reply! i tried the way win98se article directs:

"Using Registry Editor, add the Max Cached Icons string value with a value
data of 2000 to the following registry key, and then restart your computer:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer"

no "Max Cached Icons" item listed in xp's registry as per above. do you know
the steps to modify the registry? ( just wondering how to do it). the fix
from kelly's seems to have worked fine!
thank you, len kiesling

Sorry I don't, but open the .vbs script in a text editor like notepad
and look at it. Yes Kelly's site is great.

Hi Len,

More info for you:

Before making any registry edits, navigate to the key you are wanting to
modify. Once there, right click the key in question, choose Export. Name it
according to the edit you are going to perform ending with (ex)
xxx_backup.reg.

How to Add Keys and Values in the Registry:

There are five types:

String Value = REG_SZ
Binary Value = REG_BINARY
DWORD Value = REG_DWORD
Multi-String Value = REG_MULTI_SZ
Expandable String Value = REG_EXPAND_SZ

When an edit calls for adding a type:

Right click in the right pane and choose New/[Type in Question]. Once done,
double click the newly added type and enter the Value data.

When an edit calls for modifying the value:

In the right pane, double click the entry and modify the Value data.

When an edit calls for adding a Subkey:

Navigate to the key in question. Then use Edit/New/Key. Name the key
according to provided information, in the left pane. Once done, add the
Name, Type and Data in the right pane.

~~~
In this particular case, it is a REG_SZ value. So you would right click in
the right pane here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
And select New/String Value. Once placed, rename it to: Max Cached Icons
and set the Value data to: 12000.
