Desk Top Icons

My desk top icons used to be just the icon, the words and then you could see
through these words to the background...I liked this! I let my 5 year old
niece play on the computer and somehow she changed this and made it so there
are boxes of colors behind the icon words...it looks strange to me...I go
into properties and then I see that you can change the background color and
this changes the color behind the words, but I just want it to go away and
just sit on top of any background I choose...can anyone help? It seems like
it would be so simple, I must be missing something!

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and
click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop
shadows for icon labels on the desktop option", and click Ok.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects - check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".

2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be
cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize
Desktop>Web - make sure all checkboxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

First off, thank you so much for your help! Ok--I checked all of these things
and there is still no change...what do you mean by web based items on the
desk top? As far as I can see my husband only has a msn gaming zone
shortcut...and our desk top background is a desktop theme that was there when
I bought the lap top...

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. Go to the Desktop tab and set the
Wallpaper to "None". Apply & OK out. Check the items that are necessary
for transparency previously posted.

If all else fails, do a System Restore to before you let your niece play
on the computer. Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"
