Icons missing in task bar

I am having a problem with the notifcation area of my task bar. The icons for
my volume, spyware, antivirus and printer utilities keep showing up missing.
I have have set the properties to always show but they still are missing.
The only way I have found to get them back is to do a system restore to an
earlier time. However this only last for one or two start ups. Any ideas?
