Also,, while I'm still here, another problem I'm having is that I
can't get programs to create a shortcut icon on the desktop.
I've searched everywhere for them, even under "Desktop" and can't
locate icons.
There are several ways, but here's one of the easiest: Right drag the
application's exe file to the desktop. When you release the mouse
button, choose "Create shortcut here" from the menu.
I guess I'm not explaining this correctly ...

That depend entirely on the program and how its installation routine
is written. Although what you say is common, it's by no means
universal. Sometimes it's automatic, sometimes it's an option,
sometimes it isn't done at all.
