Icons losing position after being used through Remote Desktop

Synapse Syndrome

I access my desktop and server regurlarly through Remote Desktop. However
my monitors have very high resolutions, so after accessing the machines from
my laptop the desktop icons all lose their places.

It is annoying to have to move them back whenever I get back, but I do not
want to use a different user account as the whole reason for accessing them
in the first place is to use my user own account. For example, I am writing
this post on OE on my desktop machine that I am accessing from my laptop
through Remote Desktop in a cafe right now, but when I get back my icons
will be all jumbled at the top left corner of the screen.

Is there any way of making Remote Desktop sessions not save the icon
positions when you log out?

there is a neat little itilty that lets u restore the icons to a presafed
state ...
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/layout.zip
It works like a charm ....

from the txt file included in this util :

Save desktop icon positions
Tool Two files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit (26KB). Download them
from http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/layout.zip

To give you this added functionality in XP, do the following
1. Download the file Layout.zip from the link under Tools above, and extract
the contents to an empty directory.
2. Copy Layout.dll to the WindowsSystem32 directory on the hard drive which
contains Windows XP.
3. Double click on the Layout.reg file to automatically make the appropriate
changes to your registry.
4. Now go to your desktop and arrange the icons as you'd like them to be
saved.
5. Once done, right click on the Recycle Bin and select 'Save Desktop Icon
Layout'. The positions of all the icons are now saved. You can move the
icons around freely, however whenever you want them restored to their
original saved positions, right click on Recycle Bin again and select
'Restore Desktop Icon Layout'.
6. Be sure that you receive a popup msg "Desktop Icon Settings Saved". For
some reason, unknown to me (running Winxp-SP2 Tablet PC Edition), it doesn't
always save. It appears that it only actually does the save if you have
received the above confirmation message. If anyone has a newer version or
knows why this is happening, let us all know.

Hi,

There is a better solution from a old WIN NT resource kit that still works
quite well on XP.

That adds options to save and restore the icon positions to a right click
menu for "My Computer"

Make Desktop Icons Stay in Place

While the Remote Desktop feature in Windows XP Professional is very handy
for us travelers, it does have one nasty side effect: the desktop icons may
move all over the place each time you establish a Remote Desktop connection
to your home computer. Then, when you get back to it, you have to go through
the long process of putting everything back where it was. Not fun, and also
not required! Here's a cool way to keep those desktop icons in place:

1.. Download the zip file below that comes from the Windows NT 4.0
Resource Kit. Don't worry! It'll work with your Windows XP machine.
2.. Copy the files in the .zip file onto the desktop. Then place
Layout.dll in your WINDOWS\System32 directory.
3.. After the layout.dll is in the right directory, double click on the
layout.reg file.
4.. Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. You should see
two new commands: Save Desktop Icon Layout and Restore Desktop Icon Layout.
Use them to save and restore your icon arrangement.
Now you won't have to waste all that time moving your icons back after
creating a Remote Desktop Connection to your computer.

The link is no good anymore. It takes you to a different utility which I
have not looked at.

Cheers. I'm pretty confused about your post. The layout.dll and reg file
from the NT4 Resource Kit is what Johan posted a link to. It adds the
context menu items to all folders which is the only downside. Your link
points to Wintidy though after you describe layout.dll. Wintidy sounds
good, and is much more recent than the NT4 layout.dll, but PCmag is asking
$8 for it.
