icons in sytem tray won't refresh

For some reason, on suspend/resume, I often have the
problem of old icons in the system tray not refreshing.
For example, my battery icon shows half-full when it's
fully charged. My volume icon shows muted when it's
not. My network icons show disconnected when they're
connected. The only thing that cleans them up is to
logoff/logon or reboot. Any ideas of a simpler approach?

Windows XP Pro
All service packs applied
IBM ThinkPad T40 (happened on T30 too)
