Icons in notification area

Why are there some program items in my notification area (beside clock) that
are not in my Startup menu? For example Quick Time. I don't want Quick Time
running in the background.

Also, how can I get rid of system icons such as the LAN connection?

<<By the way, I had to use Firefox to enter this post because IE did not
display the popup that allows a post to be entered. Does anyone know how to
show the popup?>>

Quick time starts with your PC so the best thing to do is diable it from
MSCONFIG (click Start>Run type: msconfig. In msconfig window click the
startup tab and remove the check mark from beside the quicktime entry)

Your LAN icon, again starts with the PC. If you are not on a LAN then it is
best to disable the feature in the system BIOS. Check you PC user manual for
details on how to enter the BIOS. But be careful. Making the wrong changes
can cause your pc not to boot. Alternatively, hide the icons. Right click on
a vacant part of the task bar and click properties. On the takbar tab near
to the bottom click make sure there is a tick in the 'hide inactive icons'
box and then click the customise button. Click on the entry for the icon you
want to hide and a box will appear on the right. Click the arrow to select
the options. From this option menu select 'always hide' Finally click ok
followed by OK again in the next window to close the poperties. The icons
should now be hidden.

Thanks John.

I have two questions based on your reply:

1) If I hide the icons, does that release system resources? Or is it simply
a cosmetic feature, similar to the "+" and "-" in Windows Explorer to show
and hide directory contents?

2) Do you have a response to the Firefox question? Should I always use
Firefox to post questions to the MS forums?

Re. #1.. no, not always..

Re. #2.. use a news reader like OE rather than through a browser..

Hiding the icons doesn't necessarily release resources because, even though
the icon is not visible, the application it is attached to is still running.
The one way to grab back the resources is to disable the application that
the icon refers to completely. However, this is not always possible. For
example anti virus - you can hide the icon, but if you disable it in
MSCONFIG then it is not protecting your system

On your second question i have never been a fan of firefox, although i have
used it on numerous occasions i have always gone back to Internet explorer.
I also prefer to use Outlook express for newgroup work rather than web based
browsers.

Bingo!

I too prefer Internet Explorer and Outlook Express to anything else I've
ever used.

The folks who designed and upgraded those two pieces of software deserve the
heartfelt thanks and applause of all of us.
