Icons for folders

If I have icons on a 3 1/2 floppy and wish to use them on a XP file or
folder, how do I download them? I went to the properties of a file and
clicked "change icon". Then "Browse". I selected the icon I wanted from the
floppy but when I shut down the file & went to reopen it, the icon I
selected was gone.

Save those icons to a folder on your hard drive.

Create a folder called Icons in your My Documents folder, for example.

Copy the icons from the floppy to My Documents\Icons.

Now when you want to customize any folders you can navigate to
Documents\Icons for the icons you want to use.

Tip. Decide where you want the icons before you customize any folders. If
you move them you'll have to start all over again. Take it from me I've
done this the hard way. Just as you have.

Thanks but that is the problem. I already have such a folder but do not know
how to download to it. I can not find anywhere that will allow me to select
the floppy for downloading to a folder.

Maybe the problem is that you're thinking of "downloading," when it is just
a simple drag and drop procedure. You can also open your floppy drive from
My Computer, select the files you want to move, right click on them and
choose "Copy." Then go to the folder you want to move them to, right click
in that folder and choose "Paste."

Download isn't the word or procedure that you want. Download refers to the
process of retrieving data from another computer either over a network or
modem, i.e. over the internet.

Here are some tips from XP HELP:

You can copy more than one file or folder at a time.

To select consecutive files or folders, click the first item, press and hold
down SHIFT, and then click the last item. To select nonconsecutive files or
folders, press and hold down CTRL, and then click each item.

If you drag an item while pressing the right mouse button, you can move,
copy, or create a shortcut to the file in its new location.

To copy the item instead of moving it, press and hold down CTRL while
dragging.

If you drag an item to another disk, it is copied, not moved. To move the
item, press and hold down SHIFT while dragging.

In the My Computer folder, you can view and select the drives on your
computer, the devices with removable storage, and the files stored on your
computer.

With Windows there are always many ways of doing things. With the above
rules in mind.

Here's one way of copying your icon files from 3 1/2 disk to your Icon
folder...
Put the disk that has your icons in the 3 1/2 floppy drive.
Open My Computer.
Right click your 3 1/2 floppy drive and select Explore.
Select all the icon files that you want to copy to your Icon folder...
Right click and select Copy.
Open your Icon folder, right click and select Paste.

Of course you could've dragged those files from the a: drive to the Icon
folder.
