O

Old Bob

when you save a site in your favorites, sometimes it comes
along with a little icon (sometimes called a favicon).
Where in XP are those stored so I can copy and save to
permanently have associated with the favorite? Are they
called something different in XP than Win98?

Try Start>Search>favicon. Note where they are.
Usually in W98 they would be in a sub-folder of the Content.IE5 folder. On
occasion in the TIF folder. I would presume the same for XP?

To regain lost favicons, go to the root web page url and add /favicon .
Sometimes that will direct you to the Websites favicon as well.

Can still get it - same exact version 1.4 - as freeware here:
http://www.gratilog.net/internet2.htm
http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip (direct download)

There's also Faviconizer (freeware also):
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp

However, it is less less hassle (IMO) to save the favicons as they appear in
a folder and change icon>browse to> icon folder> apply icon. More permanent
too.

Hi Old Bob - These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they
normally will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

You can also try FavIoncizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended.
