A friend of mine changed some settings in Display -> Appearance ->
Advanced for fun on my PC while it was unlocked. I tried to reset it
and most things look alright but the toolbars in office are too big and
the icons are blurry.

A screenshot is here:

I already tried to play with the appearance settings for hours but
couldn't fix it. I tried office Help -> Detect and Repair which also
didn't work. Weird is, that the icons look the same on a different
account on the same PC, so something in office or windows in general
seems to be messed up.

I don't want to reinstall my system because of that. A fix that would
reset the settings to default would be great.

I would appreciate any help!

Try reapplying the XP theme. AND :
Control Panel > Display > Advnaced tab > Effects > Make sure "Use the following
method to smooth. .." is checked.

Hi,

thank you for your help. I already tried all kinds of changes in the
Effect dialogue and the ClearType Tuner and it didn't help at all.

Something in the registry or in an external windows file seems to be
broken, but I have no idea what it could be.

Like I already wrote, the same problems appear on my other accounts on
the same system and the changes were only made to one of the accounts.

I don't really have any experience with system restore. I of course
tried that already too, but when I went back to a previous restore
point and rebooted the restore system said that no files have been
changed and the problem was still present.
Is that a common thing? Does it maybe only capture the contents of some
important files and is restoring those?

Thank you so much for your help, I really have no clue what to do and
already tried many things to fix it, but no success so far. So any
inputs are really appreciated.

Hello,

Have you tried changing the resolution? LCDs work best in their highest
resolution.

I did. It didn't help. The resolution (1400x1050) is the standard
resolution for that laptop and it all worked fine before. When I change
it to a lower resolution it kind of looks a little better, but only
because everything else gets bigger too and the icons and toolbars
don't look that weird anymore.

There must be some way to fix that :(.

sounds like large icons are enabled.... please try going to (Display
properties>Appearance>Effects) and make sure the "large icons" box is
UNchecked. also, there are other settings that can increase your size,
all having to do with accessibility options. REFER TO THE FOLLOWING
for more ways to manipulate, or unmanipulate the office toolbar >>>

Hope it helps,
