icon meaning

On some web links and files attached to e-mail there is a
small rectangular icon in the upper left with and "X" or
some other symbol on a blank page. I have software which
recognizes and "opens" most links and files I access. I
have tried various procedures to "open" the icons to no
avail. What do they mean? How can I access them?

That is where a graphic image is supossed to be. The red x and the little
symbol is a place holder.

It means that for some reason the graphic image that's supposed to be
there didn't make it across the wire, usually because the image file on
the webserver you're connected to is missing or corrupt or it failed to
come across for network glitch reasons. You can try a refresh of the
page. Sometimes that helps.
