I am a long time mac user and have recently converted
over to a custom-built pc running windows xp pro. I am
used to being able to create my own icons for any
application I want easily on my old mac... I am just
wondering, is there a simple way to create my own icon in
Windows Paint and save it as an icon file to use on
applications, or any other simple process to create my
own icons? ...or do I have to download an icon editor?
Thanks for your help,
Ken

Windows treats bitmaps as icons. So yes use paint. ICO files are actually a collection of bitmaps in a file.

or do I have to download an icon editor?

You are going to get better results if you use an icon editor
(transparency, multiple sizes for different areas where the icon is
displayed, etc., etc.). Some systems and software expect true .ico
format icons, not the faked .ico files some people use.

Here are some instructions on making Windows .ico's...

same steps, no matter which of the many icon editors you use).
