icon background colour on desktop

Hello:
I inadvertantly put a background colour to the words
below the icon on my desktop, was clear before, no colour
at all...ie: internet explorer now has a colour under it.
Don't know how I did it and I want to go back to the
clear background....(I know, I know ... I need to get a
life)....
Please help.

Right-click a blank area on the Desktop and select Properties in menu it
brings up. In the resulting dialog box, select Appearance tab>Effects...
bar. In next box, unmark, "Show shadows under menus."

Hi,

1) Go to the run line and type: control sysdm.cpl
2) Switch to the Advanced Tab
3) The first groupbox you see is Perfornace, click the 'Settings' button
4) Scroll down the listbox to the end
5) Make sure the 'Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' is
checked

Click 'Okay', then 'Okay'

This should give you back the clear background.

Icons - Transparent

Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance/Settings/Visual Effects/"Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop". Better yet, check all items/click Apply/OK. If this still doesn't do the trick, right-click the desktop, point to Arrange Icons By and make sure that Lock Web Items on Desktop is un-checked.

I tried all the advice that was provided and didn't get anywhere. The labels below the icons are still in the background colour rather than "floating" above the background. It's petty, but it is driving me nuts
