.ico thumbnail

I have a folder full of custom-made .ico files. Recently, I installed a
program that associated itself with these .ico files. Ultimately, the
thumbnail of the .ico files all changed to this program's default image,
which, of course, does not show what the .ico is.

I tried to change the file association, but I still cannot get the
thumbnails to re-appear. I searched this forum, but no one else had the same
problem with .ico files. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Go into the preferences/options of the program that usurped the file
association and undo any option that makes it the default. Then you should
be able to reassociate it with the right icon.

Rick,

Thanks for the quick response. After some research, it doesn't appear that
I can do what you told me to. I installed Nero, and I accidentally let it
associate itself with a multitude of files. I researched the issue and found
that you have to re-install. So I did, and I disassociated each file type.

But now, the .ico files are all showing the default microsoft unkown file
image. And just so you know, I checked my other computer, which also has
this directory full of .ico files, and found that when I check "file types"
in the "folder options" for those files, it simply says that it is an ICO
extension that is a Icon file type. I tried matching those settings, and
nothing happened.

When I right-click any icon on the other computer, it says that it "opens
with an unknown application." Also, these are .ico files, so I normally can
see just the thumbnails, but when I double click them, I get the windows
viewer, but no image. On the problem computer, I get no thumbnail at all.

My apologies for the triple post. The second was a mistake. This one is to
report that I have found the answer. I needed to modify the values in the
following places in the registry editor:

HKCR\.ico
"icofile"
HKCR\icofile
"Icon File"
HKCR\icofile\DefaultIcon
"%1"

Finally!!!
