IBM Thinkpad T42 - Keyboard problem

Hi,
Was wondering if any one can help please! I've just got a new laptop and the
when I type alpa jkl etc numerics (123) appear rather than alpa characters.
I've checked the language settings but that looks right. Any ideas how I can
get alpha characters back please?
