IBM THinkpad no numeric key pad and no ascii

Hi:
I've spent hours trying to get Spanish letters via ascii, international
keyboard. But pressing ALT just pings and using an apostrophe just gives an
apostrophe. I'm not a very sophisticated user and don't understand if these
other programs are things I can use on an IBM thinkpad G series with no
numeric keypad and a Num/scroll lock key that doesn't seem to do anything.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Have you installed support for Spanish keyboard yet? Control Panel/Regional
and Language options/Languages tab, click details.

I assume that you wish to type Spanish letters such as ñ by using
the extended ASCII code (0241 in this case). As Rick suggested,
installing the Spanish keyboard layout would be the best option
for a laptop. If you insist then you can use the extended ASCII
code as follows. It's rather cumbersome:
- Press Shift+Numlock. The NumLock key is located in the top
row of buttons, just below the screen. You can tell it's pressed
when tapping letters such as J, K or L. They must appear as numbers.
- Hold down the Alt key.
- Tap 0241 on the appropriate letter keys.
- Release the Alt key. ñ will appear.

Try here http://e-courses.cerritos.edu/ipotter/charactr.htm Google is your
friend. You can also check under Accessories>System Tools>Character Map

Notebooks do have a numeric keyboard. From IBM help:

"The keyboard has keys that, when enabled, work as a 10-key numeric keypad.
(This feature becomes inactive when an external keyboard or an external
numeric keypad is attached to the computer.)

To enable or disable this numeric keypad, press and hold Shift and then
press NumLk (ScrLk).

If the numeric keypad is enabled, press and hold Shift to use the cursor-
and screen-control keys temporarily.

Note: The functions of the cursor- and screen-control keys are not printed
on the keys. "
