XP SP2 installed and system slowed to crawl. Downloaded/installed updates
from IBM site. Upgraded NAV to 2005... still no improvement... followed
instructions to uninstall XP SP2... now shows XP SP1 but still really
slow...been working on this (and rebooting constantly to make the changes)
for past 3 days... how to resolve this?

SP2 in itself has nothing that would make a computer run slow.

There must be other nasties lurking in the background.

Have your run a full scan with NAV2005 and a good spyware removal tool?

Hi Mark,

I also recommend you to perform a Clean Boot to narrow down the cause of
the problem.

1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
4. Click OK and choose Restart
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

Refer to: 310353 - How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310353

Since this is a performance issue, it may take some time to troubleshoot
the problem. If you have any update, let's get in touch.

Have a nice day!

Yes, NAV ran and reported nothing... also, Spybot Search & Destroy and
Ad-Aware were run and there were a few items (DSO exploit & Alexa related)
I've found on other machines before but they were cleared out and did not
re-appear.

Had called IBM Tech support and I did try a clean boot with these same
suggestions and the system still ran slow... so they said it was a Microsoft
issue and couldn't help further. Tried calling MS Support but passed out
from holding my breath for queue to end... :-(

What to try next?

Hi Mark,

Thank you for the update.

At this point, since it persists with Clean Boot, I suggest us to try Safe
Mode and Diagnoistic Startup.

To perform a Diagnoistic Startup, please follow these steps.

1. Click Start and click Run.
2. Type msconfig and click OK.
3. Select Diagnoistic Startup and click OK.
4. Reboot the computer.

If the problem goes away, you can try Selective Startup to narrow down the
cause of the problem.

Please take some time to perform the test and drop me a quick note when you
finish it.

Have a great day!
