IBIS Toolbar

We recently had a "blue screen of death" and the feedback
from Microsoft said that the fault was probably caused by
the "IBIS Toolbar" and to remove it. If I couldn't find
it, which I could not, I was advised to run Microsoft
Antispyware to remove it. MSAS located the IBIS Toolbar
(Adware) at c:\windows\unvise32qt.exe and I removed it.
As a novice I would like to know how this toolbar managed
to invade my computer, what its purpose is, and how to
avoid the problem in the future.

Hope someone can advise.

Do you happen to have Apple QuickTime installed on your
system? I just ran a sweep and the Microsoft Anti-Spyware
Beta tagged the QuickTime uninstaller (unvise32qt.exe) as
an IBIS Toolbar. I removed it from my system thinking
that it was installed without my permission. When I ran
Norton WinDoctor to find problems, it said that QuickTime
was missing its uninstaller program.

Can't you just put it in quarantine and then re-install it
when MSAS correct the problem? >-----Original Message-----

.

AFAIK, you can go to Control Panel > Add/Remove, select
Quicktime and choose Update to restore unvise32qt.exe, the
uninstaller.

I foolishly told MSAS to remove it and I did not back it up. I have
Quicktime but it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs.

I also removed the reported IBIS toolbar.
Is Quicktime now screwed up?

It should work okay but you won't be able to uninstall it
properly (from add/remove in the control panel). If you're
using XP, a system restore should get the file back for
you. If not, you'll need to re-install QT to get the
uninstall functionality working again.

I did the same thing. To fix, I went to QuickTime site
and grabbed latest download. It appears to have
uninstalled the old version (except for the uninstaller;
one error during the uninstall process). I have not had
problems with the new Quicktime. Only one Quicktime
shows up in add remove programs.

Yes I do and from the messages which follow yours this
seems to have been a problem encountered by others. I
will follow the advice they give.

Thanks

I wound up re-installing iTunes and that took care of it but MSAS still
detects it even though IBIS is added to the ignore list.

That is an option--if the user thinks to make the choice. It's what I've
done on my systems.

Alvis- I hope it is clear to you from this discussion:

The advice from Microsoft about the "blue screen" event is generalized--IBIS
toolbar is one cause of the event, but there are others. (in the case of
blue-screens I've seen lately, uninstalling the Google toolbar, and
reinstalling from a fresh download has been the fix)

The file that Microsoft Antispyware called out on your system may be
involved in IBIS toolbar, but it is also involved in older versions of
Apples Quicktime application--and if that file is the only instance of IBIS
detected, this is likely a false positive.

So--I doubt that you did, in fact, ever have IBIS toolbar installed.

Don't worry about it. If you feel the need to fix it, check out messages
from Andy Manchesta in the .signatures group--he gives several possible ways
to correct the situation.

I would recommend NOT adding IBIS toolbar to the ignore always list--unless
you are prepared to remember to remove it once this is corrected, which I
would expect to happen in the next definition cycle, perhaps.

IBIS toolbar is real, and worth detecting, even though what folks in this
thread (so far) are seeing is a false positive.

My choice was to quarantine the file.
