i8042prt.sys help

Hello, and thanks in advance for any and all help with my problem.

As you can see by the subject, I'm having troubles with this driver called
i8042prt.sys. In the event log I keep getting a RED X "ERROR" indicating
that this driver is failing to load. In fact here it is just as it appears
within the event viewer

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7026
Date: 4/24/2005
Time: 10:16:30 AM
User: N/A
Computer: LONNIES
Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
i8042prt

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

All I get from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp is make sure the
driver is updated....etc...etc... I don't even know what device it is
supposed to be running. I've noticed, within some of theses bases here, that
it can relate to keyboards and or a mouse, but both of these devices are
operating ok on my system. I've looked within msconfig to try to locate it
within the boot sections and system sections of that file but I cannot find
anything about the driver anywhere within those. What in the world can I do
to get rid of this error? I discovered this error because my system began to
take a lot longer to load up to the desktop.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Lonnie

The i8042prt driver controls the keyboard and PS/2-compatible mouse for
the Intel 8042 controller. Try reinstalling your motherboard drivers.
You would get these from either the motherboard mftr., Intel, or the
OEM if you have that sort of machine (Dell, HP, etc.). I'm not sure why
you would be getting the failure all of a sudden though. Did you change
something on the machine? Is your computer fairly old?

Thanks Malke for your reply.
The only thing that I've done recently is to d/l a couple of updates from
my OEM provider (Gateway) and installed them. None of these updates
pertained to the keyboard or the mouse.....:( really strange, nor were they
relating to the MB. One of them was a network driver (can't remember the
other one right now). I'll follow your suggestion and get back to the forum
here later. Thanks again.

Well that didn't work Malke. I appreciate the help. It seems though that
the problem was on my system from the very beginning (if you can believe
that)...sheesh. The reason I know that is because after your suggestion
didn't work, I figured, well, I might as well reinstall to see if that works
:( ... man oh man I did all that and it is still there. The only thing I
can figure out is that it was there all along from the beginning, and
something else was beginning to slow my system down. Man, what a bummer :(

So if I understand your post correctly, you probably have failing
hardware. Call Dell tech support and get them to replace your
motherboard.

Good luck, Lonnie.

That's just the thing :) My keyboard and mouse are operating properly.
So I don't know what the deal is and why it is giving me this error. When I
go to Device Manager, I don't see any indication of troubles with drivers.
However I do see in the event viewer that that driver is not loading. Really
wierd :)

Gateway says that it is a Microsoft error, and that I need to call MS
boy does it ever end :)
