i8042prt error

I'm running Windows XP Pro.

Recently I noticed that my CapsLock key isn't working. When I press the
CapsLock the Start menu pops up. After investigating I noticed I am getting
the following error in my event log:

Event ID: 7026
Source: Service Control Manager
The following boot-start or system start driver(s) failed to load: i8042prt

I have tried the troubleshooting recommendations: Disconnecting, unloading,
reinstalling, etc. but there is not change. I suspect these 2 events may be
connected. Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem?

One other possibility is that either the keyboard port or
the i8042prt chip is no longer working.
