\i386 files not found upon repair install

Recently tried to reinstall Win XP Pro without overwriting existing
installation. During installation I received several error messages
indicating that about 50 \i386 related files could not be found. I
now have problems with networking and windows installer. Any
suggestions would be helpful.

You probably have some disk damage in /i386. I would try chkdsk (rightclick
drive icon in explorer, properties, tools tab, 'error checking', Restart.)
If "..50/i386" is a folder on a hidden partition, you will need some utility
that can see it.

I might not have given great information. I received fifty different
error messages for fifty different files related to the install
program looking for and not finding the files from the installation
disc drive location (F:) in directory \i386. For instance: File
iisRtl.dl_ not found in F:\i386. It then gives choices to enter a
different location or try again or cancel.

I would say you have a bad burn of the setup cd, or one that has been
damaged. You can buy another copy of any original MS software for a nominal
charge.

Regarding "...Recently tried to reinstall Win XP Pro without overwriting
existing installation....." -you can only avoid overwriting an existing
installation if you reinstall to a folder other than C:\Windows, a different
partition or HD.

Are you attempting to install via setup accessing an i386 folder on the HD?
(A method often used by OEMs for system restore) - if so - cannot be done
without overwriting original installation.
