Cannot install any of the optional Win XP networking components

I have encountered an unusual problem when attempting to install any of the
optional Win XP networking components from the genuine Microsoft Win XP with
SP2 CD .

The problem occurs (for instance) during the installation of 'Simple TCP/IP
Services', where the installer asks for the location of a file called
simpletcp.dl_ . I removed the shrink wrap from the genuine MS Win XP CD
supplied by MSY Technologies (an Microsoft accredited builder of PCs in
Australia) , browsed to the I386 folder (where I could see the simpletcp.dl_
file on the CD) only to have the Installer state that 'Setup cannot copy the
file simpletcp.dl_ '. The error continues to recur no matter how many times
you hit Retry and if you hit Cancel then the Installer terminates.

Additionally, if you browse to C:\Windows\source\I386 (instead of the Win XP
CD) where a file simpletcp.dll exists, the installer behaves as above except
that it now refers to simpletcp.dll as the target that it cannot copy.

The above problem also applies when attempting to install other additional
components such as Management and Monitoring Tools and is seemingly very
similar to that discussed in:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884018 and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555268 . However, attempting to repair the
security database secedit.sdb along the lines discussed in these articles has
not rectified the problem in my case (I was not able to use one of the
suggested repair methods because Security and Configuration and Analysis
snap-in was not available in the MMC console).

MSY do the normal PC builder installation and then assign the actual Win XP
CD key number string at the end, thus the shrink wrapped genuine CD. MSY are
not aware of this being a generic problem with their installations and have
suggested reinstalling XP or bringing back to them.

I thought that I would run the problem by this forum before I contemplate a
lengthy XP re-install and add the myriad of updates since SP2.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated.

Your error is almost certainly a problem with the CD from Microsoft.

REPLACEMENT MS CDs - 800-360-7561

Borrowing one from a friend who uses the same edition of XP would also work
just fine.

Thank you for the reply Mark. A faulty CD is not a possibility that sprang
to mind. This is one of two PCs that I have recently purchased (~ 6 mths
apart) from MSY for friends. The second PC should also have a similar XP
Home SP2 CD (probably still shrink wrapped as well). I will probably not be
able to trial the other CD for a week or so.

I had just set-up the first PC on a modem/router home network and was having
a problem pinging one of the two PCs on the network, although they can both
see the router and the internet (the actual reason that I was looking to add
the additional network components was to see if that resolved the ping
problem).

In your Post you wrote REPLACEMENT MS CDs - 800-360-7561. Is this a US
phone number? If the CD is at fault it will be more convenient for me to go
through MS in Australia.

Hi Mark

I have now tried another XP Home SP2 disk without luck. So I bit the bullet
and used the original disk to do an upgrade and put all the subsequent
updates back on. This has resolved the problem of getting the additional
components on.

Thank you for your time and effort.
Regards
Ron
