What is your estimate of how many times a virus checker found and blocked a
virus on your system in the last few years?
Be truthful. Then, ask yourself 'why did I get that virus'. (if any).

It's more than an estimate. I can tell you exactly. It was once, about 10-12
years ago. A virus on a diskette that a friend gave me was found.

Like you, I am very careful, and I could get away without having an
anti-virus the great majority of the time. But unlike you, I don't think I'm
perfect and I want to have a software protecting me as well.

Yes!

There are plenty of surprises out there.

I work on a lot of vintage machines...(and save data for people)
at least twice I've examined floppies that were made on machines that had
never even been on-line.

Much to my surprise...my AV software kicked in and found a boot sector
virus!

LOL

with no virus checker you could have an infected backup and not even know
it.

I work on machines all the time that are infected, yet still "function"...

Lol...Today's malware is designed to work without you even knowing it.
Your computer can operate flawlessly while sending out spam or worms or
your keystrokes... Purveyors of malware love to meet up with the likes

I have to ask then; what difference does it make? If the computer functions,
no problems, everything works how can you have a virus? If the machines you
work on function how do you know they're infected?

Here's a clue for you: when someone encloses a term in quotes, it
often means that the term is being used loosely.

He never said the machines function perfectly, you fool.

Few malware infestations are viral these days. (No money in it.) The
action is in trojans (often protected by a rootkit), adware and spyware.
Malvertising and bots are popular vectors. To boast about not being hit
with a virus is like boasting that you haven't been hit by a meteor.

I haven't been hit by a meteor. What's more I have no problems with my
system. I don't get advertisements or any other unwanted garbage. Not
boasting merely stating facts. Believe it or not.
