oh come on, if he bought it at WAL-MART, do you think he is actually smart
enough to do that?

Wal-Mart=hillbilly hell for the rest of the normal population.

Did you do the master/slave jumpers?

#1 Even if the drive really is a lemon (as opposed to having been
imporperly connected), these things happen. Liteon produces thousands
of drives per month and a few bad ones are bound to get past QC. That's
not a reason to abandon the brand entirely.

#2 If it really is a bad drive, return it to Wal-Mart. You can get a
Toshiba DVD-ROM drive from Newegg.com for under $40. They also have a
$20 Rosewill CD-RW that's looking kind of tempting.

Yup I made sure it was set to master and its the ummm not sure which model
lol the newest I went to liteons website but it wouldnt let me go to the
DVD-ROMS. ah well I should have known better then getting it from walmart.
Gonna return it and get one from newegg or best buy maybe a DL drive finally

Best Buy may have what you want but their prices suck. Newegg.com
generally has much lower prices, and you'll save money even after
paying for tax + shipping. I've also had good experience with
zipzoomfly.com, and they offer free 2-day shipping on a lot of their
items.

I think you only pay tax in California, New Jersy, or Tennessee. I could be
wrong, not afraid to admit it, but they do not charge tax to ship to my
location.

Usually there is a label on the drive to indicate it's manufacturer and
model number.

If the drive is a Liteon JLMS XJ-HD166s and I suspect it is, you can score a
firmware from here:

http://www.jlms.com.tw/download.htm

JLMS (whoever they are) took over the dvd reader division of some of the
liteon drives some time ago like a couple years.

I have had two liteon drives ( a CDRW and a DVDROM) die on me after
about a year (right about the time the warrenty expires). However,
reviews of these drives always seem to be positive. I just ordered a
Liteon DVDR/RW drive from New Egg.

Lemons happen and drives are cheap.

Weird, we've never had a problem with them. We've had good luck with
Sony and Toshiba drives too though, so maybe they're worth looking at
if you want to change manufacturers.

Reminds me of a Kenwood triple beam cd rom - ****ing thing died after 10
days, the seller warrantied it. Bad luck I thought - then 1 year 1 month
later the damn thing dies again! Too bad so sad says Kenwood. I say ****
THEM in the mean time. Believe it or not, Samsung has begun to put out
decent drives and so has NEC. Go figure.

I bought the Lite On SOHW 1633s 16x DVD+R (RW) /DVD-R (RW) dual layer at
my local Wal Mart this week. Install was flawless, and I've reclaimed
the desk space that used to be occupied by a TDK external burner.

I bought it at Wal Mart because of years of reliable service from other
Lite On optical drives (CD writers and DVD players).

Take it back to the Wal Mart and exchange it. Just like with cars, any
vendor can ship a lemon...and the most common failure point for
electronics components is during the first few minutes of use.

As for sbb78247: what's up with attitude about buying at Wal Mart? The
Lite On, Linksys, Netgear ete etc products they sell there differ from
those sold elswhere in exactly what way????

come visit this hillbilly hell and you will see. maybe all are not as bad
as this one, but it sure draws in a certain "element".

maybe it was a lemon for this guy, but i have seen the way the mimimum wage
stockers play slam dunk with most of the merchandise in the store, so no
thanks.

s

utter bullshit no one place handles merchandise any different than
the next. There is NO difference between the exact same product from
one distributor to the next.
