Greetings.

If I have a brand new Laptop with Windows Vista OEM in Czech preinstalled,
how can I get the OS in English without having to buy the English version?

I have contacted the resellers and Fujistu-siemens ...
they say that only the Czech version is available.

Thanks.

You can't. Vista Ultimate can use additional languages via downloads from
Windows Update but otherwise you either need to purchase the laptop with the
language you want, or purchase Windows in the language you want and
clean-install it and wipe the existing copy of Windows.

If you search on microsoft.com, then I believe you can download a virtual
Vista machine for use Virtual PC, which I suspect would be in English. How
long it lasts for, or what restrictions it would have, you'd need to check.

Many thanks for replying.

Well, logically, it makes non sens to have two different licenses of Vista
OEM for the very same (very same hardware) brand new Laptop.
As I cannot use the Czech OS, I'll use only the English one.

So, why pay for two licenses?

No, what makes no sense is your deliberately buying a laptop with a
Czech language license, and then changing your mind and expecting to be
given a free copy of Windows.

If you must go with Microsoft, you gotta play by their rules which, in
this case, means paying MS twice. If you're sick of this kind of crap,
maybe you would be interested in Open Source. Ubuntu is a great
operating system, can change languages on the fly and the cost is ZERO!
Not only that, they will pay the shipping to send you the CD for free!
Get it at www.ubuntu.com/

Right Alias. That is just as difficult as buying another copy of Vista. He
already paid for his first copy when he got the computer. This copy can not
be used on another computer. So, he can't sell it to recoup his expenses. In
effect, you are telling him to throw away his copy.

You can do better than that. I know you can.

Bruce,
No, I'm not asking for a free license.

Given that I'll be buying a legal license of Windows, all I'm asking for is
that I get a version of Vista that I'm able to use.

In fact, I haven't bought the laptop yet.
I have been shopping around and so far, I have been hitting the wall: no
reseller here has Vista EN pre-installed.

Is it that hard for MS to cancel/destroy the Czech License and give me an
English one?
After all, the cost of the EN and the CZ versions are the same here.

Anyway, paying for a second license, and keeping the Czech one is not
acceptable.

Order one from Dell:

If you were asking for an English license to replace an already
purchased Czech OEM license, at no additional cost, then you actually
were, in affect, asking for a free license from Microsoft. Perhaps this
isn't your intent, but that's pretty much the way it works out.

Given that I'll be buying a legal license of Windows, all I'm asking for is
that I get a version of Vista that I'm able to use.

Then all you have to do is purchase the laptop from a vendor who is
willing and able to meet your specific needs. Or purchase the laptop
without an operating system and separately purchase and install a retail
license in the language of your choice. (Which would probably cost more,
admittedly.)

In fact, I haven't bought the laptop yet.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Your original post made it sounds as if you had.

I have been shopping around and so far, I have been hitting the wall: no
reseller here has Vista EN pre-installed.

Have you looked at any of the many reputable on-line merchants, rather
than just the local bricks and mortar shops? You do have the whole
Internet at your disposal, after all.

Is it that hard for MS to cancel/destroy the Czech License and give me an
English one?

After you've purchased it, certainly. Remember, when buying OEM, all
of your business is with the vendor, not Microsoft. You'll have
purchased that OEM license from the vendor, not Microsoft.

After all, the cost of the EN and the CZ versions are the same here.

Since you've stated that you cannot get the OEM English license, I'll
assume that you're referring to retail licenses. Unfortunately, retail
pricing, even the wholesale prices offered to retailers for retail
licenses, have little to no relationship to the prices of OEM System
Builder packages sold to computer manufacturers; these are heavily
influenced by volume. Granted, in theory, the cost should be the same,
as the manufacturing processes are identical, but demand has an impact,
as well.

Anyway, paying for a second license, and keeping the Czech one is not
acceptable.

As you've made no purchase yet, I'd agree that to purchase two licenses
for one computer would be somewhat less than wise, shall we say. So
don't purchase the Czech OEM license; find a merchant who'll meet your
needs. I've always found that most merchants, when faced with the fact
that intransigence is about to lose them a sale, come around. Walking
out is a viable bargaining ploy.

There are some EU consumer laws you can use, but if you knew the machine was
Czech before you brought it, it would be at their discretion. If you
weren't aware of that it should be possible to get the machine at least
partially refunded.

Perhaps one of the other MVPs, would know if upgrading to Ultimate and then
downloading the English language pack would work?

I'm obtaining the Czech version of Windows Vista at the moment, I'll install
it tomorrow, then I'll check to see if it is possible to convert it to
English using the language packs available for Windows Vista Ultimate.

But this feature is only available for Ultimate, so you'll need to ensure
the laptop you buy has that version. Either way I'll post back tomorrow
with the results.

What is the deal with these Czech versions that seem to be all the rage?
Are they cheap or what?
