I want to use "compare side by side" but it's gray--I can't highli

I was using the Compare side by Side.
Someone closed the window without the x just by clicking below--I don't know
how.
I reopened window but now the compare side by side option doesn't hightlight.

What should I do to get it back?

Open the documents you want to compare side by side. On the Window menu,
click Compare Side by Side with.
